Brown Cotton Damask - By the Yard
Brown gowns seem to be an iconic look for 18th century women of "a certain age." Seen in numerous portraits of both English and American women. Many gowns are depicted as a plain silk taffeta but there are examples of large scale damask as well. Some gowns may have been remade with earlier fabrics.
The MET has a silk damask gown in their collection, dated 1776, of a very similar color and design. Accession Number 2009.300.731
There is another example in the John Bright Collection.
Please note! This color was difficult to capture on camera. The first images were taken outside on an overcast day, images 5, 6 and 7 show the fabric in bright sunlight. The images shown in 'natural light' show the true color best on our screen. Color is closer to "toasted almond" than "chocolate". Pantone paint color 4242C looks like a good match when looking at images online.
